Dr. Sweeney is Professor and Chairman of Physiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He has made important contributions to the field of molecular motors and muscle physiology as well as evaluations of possible causes and treatments of muscle diseases. Dr. Sweeney is a member of the Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) of the National Institute of Health (NIH). He is the Scientific Director for the Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD) organization and on the Translational Research Advisory Committee for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Dr. Sweeney is widely published, serves on the editorial board of the Journal of General Physiology, and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University.
